ReachLocal Brisbane Supports Dolly’s Dream Against Bullying

On 5th August 2018, 9 staff from the ReachLocal Brisbane office will take part in the Brisbane Half Marathon to raise money for the charity, Dolly’s Dream. We will brave the blistering cold as we compete in this 21.1 km race, through Brisbane City streets, in the early hours of Sunday morning to raise funds and awareness to combat the serious issue of bullying.

The question you may be asking yourself is, what could possess us, obviously magnificent specimens of physical fitness, to undertake such an endeavour?

The answer is quite simple. All of us have children in our lives, whether we are parents ourselves or as part of our wider families and friendship circles. We all know firsthand that at times, children do not feel like confiding in adults when they face bullying. They feel they may not be listened to or believed. In some cases, bullying can be so serious that the victim feels they would be placing family and friends at risk if they were to go public.

Current research suggests that up to one in four students has experienced some level of bullying face-to-face and one in five has experienced bullying online.

Amy “Dolly” Everett was a bullying victim who tragically ended her life at just 14 years of age. Dolly has gone from being the youthful face of the iconic Australian brand, Akubra hats, to now being a reminder of the tragic effects cyberbullying has on its victims.

We have pledged our support to Dolly’s Dream so that the lives of other children may be safeguarded.
